How to Choose Backpack Equipment and Camping Gear

One of the most important parts of your camping or backpack equipment is, of course, your tent. Choosing a tent may be more difficult than you think! Make sure before you buy a tent that you think carefully about where and how you will be using it as tents are designed to be used in different conditions and seasons. An all season tent will not be suitable for mountain trips in the winter!

Things to Think About Before Purchasing Your Tent

The Season

Classification of tents depends on the temperature and season it is appropriate for.

Three Season – usable throughout the year except when it is very cold.
Four Season – Suitable for all conditions including extreme cold
All Season – typically family tents suitable for camping in the summer.

Weight and Size

A tent must, of course, accomodate an appropriate number of people. Although a bigger tent may be more comfortable you also need to consider how heavy it is if you’re going to do a lot of hiking. Make sure before you buy a tent you find out how much it weighs as this can vary a lot. You will not want to buy one that’s too heavy for you to move around.

Keeping Dry

Tents nowadays have a water resistant coating that allows air to penetrate for ventilation. In most tents you can attach a fly to the poles to prevent water coming in but allowing ventilation. Look for a tent with a sewn in floor.

Erecting the Tent

An easy to set up tent is obviously important. The easiest to erect are A frame and dome tents. It’s easy to pack them up when you move on. Cabin tents are harder.

Ventilation

Good ventilation is essential and you should look for a tent that has openings on all the sides. Mesh screens on every side are also a good idea and are present in most tents. Insects and debris flying around in the air will be kept out by the mesh and you also get good airflow through the tent.

Conclusion

It is not hard to buy suitable cheap camping gear or backpack equipment but you need to research the suitability of the gear for the time of year and conditions that you intend to use it.
